Tesla Roadster to Visit Las Vegas July 27-28 during Renew America Roadtrip
Michael Craner and Madushini "Maddy" Gunawardana own a Tesla Roadster and have launched an ambitious plan to travel cross-country in their all-electric car for 17 days while also promoting green energy and charitable works along the way. They are calling this adventure the Renew America Roadtrip at: http://www.renewamericaroadtrip.com
Michael and Maddy plan to start their cross-country journey from New York to San Francisco via LA on July 15th. If everything goes according to schedule, they should pass through Nevada on their way to Barstow, California, the afternoon of July 27th. The LVEVA plans to greet them at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve and have dinner at Wolfgang Puck's Cafe about 3:30 to 5 PM. There should be some good photo opportunities using the solar panel parking garage at "the Springs" for a YouTube video and accompanying photo blogs. The Las Vegas Springs Preserve will also emphasize conservation and the environment with the surrounding desert gardens. There is even a windpower display as part of the Springs Preserve gardens exhibit.
Michael and Maddy will be staying at the Element Hotel in Summerlin overnight. The location of the hotel is on S. Town Center Drive near the 215 Beltway on the west side of town. Each of the hotels in the Element chain is owned by Starwood Resorts and are built to LEED certified building code standards.
The LVEVA plans to stage an EV Fiesta the following morning, July 28th, from 9 AM to noon where the media will be invited. There will have several electric cars on display, as well as invited speakers in the hotel’s conference room, nearby lobby and outdoor patio. The Element Hotel is located next to the Nevada Cancer Research Institute.
The driving team is also hoping to do a photo shoot at the NV Energy Clark County Photovoltaic Station near Russell Road in the afternoon. They are planning to have speakers from UNLV's Center for Energy Research, Amonix (provider of the High Concentration PV panels for the project) and NV Energy during the EV Fiesta who are all contributing to this solar power station pilot program. One of the Amonix researchers is also a Tesla Roadster owner who has already made an all-electric run from Torrance, California to Las Vegas and back. He is the third Tesla Roadster owner to do this since the cars first started rolling off the assembly line to waiting customers.
Michael and Maddy will depart Las Vegas about 3 PM on July 28th to arrive in Barstow, CA by 7 PM to recharge the Tesla Roadster overnight before heading on to LA.
At the end of the road trip, the driving team plans to auction off the Tesla Roadster for their charity sponsors.
Ford, Nissan and Tesla Motors to Receive Low-Cost Loans from U.S. Dept. of Energy
SYNOPSIS: Loan guarantees are distinct from other federal funding initiatives including $25 Billion set aside in 2008, but not yet allocated, and $2 Billion for battery and EV component manufacturing.
Press Release
Washington, DC – Today, the Obama Administration announced $8 billion in conditional loan commitments for the development of innovative, advanced vehicle technologies that will create thousands of green jobs while helping reduce the nation’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil. The loan commitments announced today by the President include $5.9 billion for Ford Motor Company to transform factories across Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio to produce 13 more fuel efficient models; $1.6 billion to Nissan North America, Inc. to retool their Smyrna, Tennessee factory to build advanced electric automobiles and to build an advanced battery manufacturing facility; and $465 million to Tesla Motors to manufacture electric drive trains and electric vehicles in California.
These are the first conditional loan commitments reached as part of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. The Department plans to make additional loans under this program over the next several months to large and small auto manufacturers and parts suppliers up and down the production chain.
“We have an historic opportunity to help ensure that the next generation of fuel-efficient cars and trucks are made in America,” said President Obama. "These loans – and the additional support we will provide through the Section 136 program – will create good jobs and help the auto industry to meet and even exceed the tough fuel economy standards we’ve set, while helping us to regain our competitive edge in the world market."
"By supporting key technologies and sound business plans, we can jumpstart the production of fuel efficient vehicles in America," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said. "These investments will come back to our country many times over – by creating new jobs, reducing our dependence on oil, and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions."
These commitments will help reduce the 140 billion gallons of gasoline Americans consume each year, lessening the nation’s dependence on the volatile world market for oil, and decreasing the cause of a fifth of the nation’s carbon emissions. The Obama Administration recently announced an agreement to raise passenger car fuel standards from 27.5 miles per gallon to a target of 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2016. While 35 mpg is ambitious, the Department of Energy’s auto loan program received more than a hundred applications for loans to help achieve greater fuel efficiency. The competition among advances in conventional engine technologies, next-generation biofuels, and transportation electrification holds the potential to increase US fuel efficiency dramatically over the next several years.
The Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program is an open and competitive process focusing on the best companies and best technologies in American manufacturing. First appropriated in the fall of 2008, the program will provide about $25 billion in loans to companies making cars and components in US factories that increase fuel economy at least 25 percent above 2005 fuel economy levels. The intense technical and financial review process is focused not on choosing a single technology over others, but is aimed at promoting multiple approaches for achieving a fuel efficient economy.
Applications for the loan program have included vehicles running on electricity, biofuels, and advanced combustion engines, and were submitted by both car and component makers, US automakers, US manufacturing subsidiaries of non-US-based companies, major US auto parts suppliers, and innovative startups.
Ford
Ford Motor Company will receive $5.9 billion in loans through 2011 to help finance numerous engineering advances to traditional internal combustion engines and electrified vehicles. In addition, theses loans will help the company convert two truck plants to the production of cars. Ford will be raising the fuel efficiency of more than a dozen popular models, including the Focus, Escape, Taurus and F-150, representing close to two million new vehicles annually and helping to transform nearly 35,000 employees to green engineering and manufacturing jobs in factories across 5 states: Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. Ford is driving a major upgrade, leveraging a portfolio of technologies, including the direct injection, smart turbocharging EcoBoost engine, advanced transmissions, and new hybrid technologies.
The facilities that will be impacted by today’s announcement include: Chicago Assembly, Louisville Assembly, Dearborn Assembly, Dearborn Engine, Livonia Transmission, Michigan Assembly, Van Dyke Transmission, Kansas City Assembly, Cleveland Engine, Lima Engine, and Sharonville Transmission.
Nissan
Nissan will receive $1.6 billion to produce electric cars and battery packs at its manufacturing complex in Smyrna, Tennessee. The loan will aid in the construction of a new battery plant and modifications to the existing assembly facility. These fully electric cars are an important milestone for vehicles produced in the United States by a major international automaker. These cars are energy efficient, using electricity at a gasoline-equivalent rate of more than 350 mpg. This new state of the art facility is a notable effort by a major automaker with well-established US operations to produce its most advanced vehicles and lithium-ion batteries. Nissan aims to manufacture a cost-competitive all-electric car, overcoming a major obstacle to widespread adoption of pure electric vehicles. Nissan will offer electric vehicles to fleet and retail customers, and plans to ramp up production capacity in Smyrna up to 150,000 vehicles annually. Nissan anticipates the project may result in an increase of up to 1,300 jobs in Smyrna when full production is reached.
Tesla
Tesla Motors will receive $465 million that will also advance electric vehicles. The first loan will finance a manufacturing facility for the Tesla Model S sedan. This vehicle demonstrates how the emerging electric car is becoming more affordable: the Model S is expected to be roughly $50,000 cheaper than Tesla’s first vehicle, the Roadster. The all-electric sedan consumes no gasoline and runs entirely on electricity from any conventional 120V or 220V outlet. It will get the equivalent of more than 250 miles per gallon, far exceeding the 32.7 mpg minimum efficiency required for large sedans. Production of the Model S will begin in 2011 and ramp up to 20,000 vehicles per year by the end of 2013. This integrated facility expects to create 1,000 jobs in Southern California.
The second part of the loan will support a facility to manufacture battery packs and electric drive trains to be used in Teslas and in vehicles built by other automakers, including the Smart For Two city car by Daimler. This project demonstrates how Tesla’s early technology will support electric projects at larger companies. Early pilot battery pack production will begin in 2011, reaching about 10,000 by 2012 and 30,000 packs in 2013. The new facility expects to employ 650 people in the Bay area of Northern California.
Tesla Motors Gets Loan Approval from US Department of Energy
Electric vehicle manufacturer will use loans to build an assembly plant for Model S sedan and another facility to manufacture electric powertrains.
Press Release, June 23, 2009
SAN CARLOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) —Tesla Motors has received approval for about $465 million in low-interest loans from the US Department of Energy to accelerate the production of affordable, fuel-efficient electric vehicles.
Tesla will use $365 million for production engineering and assembly of the Model S, an all-electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels up to 300 miles per charge.
The Model S has an anticipated base price of $49,900 after a $7,500 US federal tax credit. It has lifetime ownership costs equivalent to a conventional car with a sticker price of $35,000, thanks to the lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline and a relative lack of service and maintenance. Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011 in a state-of-the-art assembly plant employing about 1,000 workers.
Tesla will use $100 million for a powertrain manufacturing plant. The facility will supply all-electric powertrain solutions to other automakers, greatly accelerating the availability of mass-market EVs. The new facility will employ about 650 people.
Tesla is in the final stages of negotiation for facilities in California.
The loans are part of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program, which provides incentives to new and established automakers to build more fuel-efficient vehicles. Created in 2007 and appropriated in September 2008, the $25 billion ATVM aims to reduce America’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil and create “green collar” jobs. The program is entirely unrelated to the stimulus package or the so-called “bailout” funds that General Motors and Chrysler have received.
“Tesla will use the ATVM loan precisely the way that Congress intended -- as the capital needed to build sustainable transport,” said Tesla CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk. “We are honored that the US government selected Tesla to be among the first companies to participate in this progressive program.”
Building on Proven Technology
The Model S sedan features exceptional performance, styling and utility, with unrivaled cargo and passenger space. Its floor-mounted powertrain is the culmination of a half-decade of engineering in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, where Tesla developed the Roadster.
The highly acclaimed Roadster is the first production battery electric vehicle to travel more than 200 miles per charge and the first US- and EU-certified Lithium-Ion battery electric vehicle. With an estimated range of 244 miles per charge and zero tailpipe emissions, it’s the first production vehicle to offer supercar performance with a clean conscience.
Tesla has never applied for federal funds for the Roadster, an American sports car that consumes no gasoline whatsoever. Tesla expects the Roadster business unit to be profitable in the third quarter. Privately held Tesla will finance sales and marketing for the Model S through private capital.
Tesla has delivered more than 500 Roadsters to customers. Later this month, Tesla will begin delivering its second-generation Roadster and Roadster Sport, an even higher-performance vehicle.
Teslas do not require routine oil changes or exhaust system work. They have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. They qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates, sales tax exemptions, free parking, commuter-lane passes and other perks. The Model S costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles – a bargain even if gasoline were less than $1 per gallon.
The Model S, which carries its charger onboard, can be recharged from any conventional outlet. Three battery pack choices will offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge. Tesla is taking reservations online and at its two showrooms in California.
Tesla will expand its network of showrooms this summer with stores in New York, Chicago, Seattle and Miami. Tesla will open its London showroom June 25, followed by Munich and Monaco. Additional stores will be opened in Washington DC and Toronto.
Renault Announces Electric Car for Project Better Place with 3-Way Refueling Capability
Renault will roll out a concept version of the “Fluence” model electric car with 3-way refueling capability—battery pack swapping, recharging at 240 VAC, 30 Amps or recharging at 480 VAC, 3-phase current at 70 Amps. The Fluence is based on the mid-size Renault Megane sedan and concept model is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in Germany during September 2009. The first production models of the electric version are scheduled to be introduced in Israel during the second half of 2011. A compact electric car is also planned for production by Renault in 2012.
The electric refueling system is being designed in conjunction with Japanese auto manufacturer Nissan on behalf of Project Better Place, that has already lined up several nations to host this technology infrastructure and the cars that will be part of each country’s clean transportation system. These include Israel, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States (Hawaii and California regions).
The battery pack of the Renault Fluence will be located behind the back seat. There will be an opening under the trunk for quick unloading and uploading of the battery pack. Project Better Place recently demonstrated a robotic battery pack replacement system that allows the driver to pull up over an exchange bay. The battery pack swapping system uses an automated conveyer system to retrieve the consumed battery pack and carry it away to a recharging/recycling area.
At the same time the consumed battery pack is being carried away, a new battery pack is brought in from the opposite side of the conveyer and latched into the bottom transport area in the Fluence. Total time consumed is about one minute. The driver does not need to leave the car and can drive away more quickly than a traditional gasoline pumping stop. Renault is branding this system as “Quick-Drop” in relation to naming components of its automotive product line.
If a battery swapping station is not available, the Renault Fluence can also be charged from a home garage from a 240 VAC outlet with a current capacity 10 or 16 amps. This charging procedure will take about six to eight hours to recharge a battery pack completely from its discharged state. A commercial 480 VAC, three-phase charging system that provides 32 amps of capacity will also be available to licensed distributors. Because larger amounts of current can be moved into the battery more quickly, this larger system should be able to recharge a Fluence battery pack to an 80% State of Charge (SoC) in 30 minutes.
